Most types of database applications can now be presented in a Web Browser, removing the need for deploying them to individual desktops.
Microsoft's Reporting Services allow the most complex reports to be presented within a browser and exported to PDF format.

Here is an example of a Planned Maintenance Worksheet report from that database which shows the sort of quality document that can be generated as a PDF.
